Alhaurin (Alhaurin el Grande) is situated on a northern foothill of the Sierra de Mijas mountains on the Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. It is a small historic town that offers spectacular views over the Guadalhorce Valley and Malaga Vale, and is an idyllic location in which to buy Spanish property away from the throng of tourists associated with the coastal resorts along the Costa del Sol.
In fact, when you visit this sleepy town it can come as quite a surprise that the energetic resorts of Fuengirola and Torremolinos are only on the other side of the mountain. They can be reached by a 20-minute drive, so granting all who stay in Alhaurin easy access to the beaches, shopping and nightlife on offer along the Costa del Sol coast.
Alhaurin itself is a classical Mediterranean town. Its streets are narrow and winding, and its buildings are a mass of white walls with black wrought iron balconies. In the centre of the town is the revered town square, with its beautiful town hall and the Vera Santa Cruz church. The town square is often the focus of many festivities and fiestas throughout the year - Semana Santa (Holy Week) being perhaps the most important in the calendar.
There is a large variety of Spanish property available to purchase in Alhaurin. Whitewashed townhouses and villas make up the bulk of the offerings in the older parts of town, and buyers will find a selection Alhaurin property in need of renovation here too. In the more commercial areas of Alhaurin, flats and apartments are available, including many on new Alhaurin property developments that are in the process of construction. On the outskirts of town there are many plots of land available to purchase - ideal if you want to construct your own villa in Spain with a view over the orange and lemon trees which carpet parts of the hillside around Alhaurin.
