Home of the 'Spaghetti Western', the province of Almeria nestles between the Sierra
Nevada mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea on the southeast tip of Spain.
Although unknown to the vast majority of tourists until recently, the region is fast
becoming a premier destination in which to buy Spanish property, whether it be for
income or as a place to retire in the sun.
Almeria's climate is one of the hottest and driest in Spain. The Sierra Nevada
mountains block much of the weather coming in off the Atlantic, so keeping the skies
clear and the sun shining for more than 3,000 hours every year. During the summer
the temperature regularly reaches up into the mid 30°c range, and during the winter,
minimum temperatures rarely fall below 7°c at night. On average, Almeria's daytime
temperature reaches 21°c or above on 208 days of the year.
The province of Almeria covers a vast array of landscapes. On the coast, the capital of
the province - also called Almeria - overlooks long stretches of sandy beach. There
are also coves and headlands that jut out into the sea, as well as a smattering of tourist
resorts and beachside restaurants and bars. Further inland, the coastal greens quickly
give way to the golden browns of a desert-like environment, which could in places be
compared to a lunar landscape. Sandstone and dried up riverbeds dominate in an area
famous for the filming of A Fist Full of Dollars and Peter O Toole's Lawrence of
Arabia. Yucca City, the location used for filming several Spaghetti Westerns in the
1970s, is located near Tabernas and is open to visitors.
Almeria city itself boasts a mix of ancient architecture and modern facilities. Shops
and restaurants cater for every style and need, but perhaps the biggest attraction is the
ancient citadel - Moorish Alcazaba - which stands on a hill overlooking the modern
city.
There are several new Spanish property developments in various phases of
construction throughout the province of Almeria. These include mountainside
locations, hillside locations overlooking Almeria Bay and beachfront properties. All
are built to a high specification and are good value for money, being less expensive
than equivalent sized properties on the Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca. Resale Almeria
property is also widely available.
Popular locations in which to buy Almeria property include the city of Almeria,
Bedar, Sierra Cabrera, El Calon, and Mojacar overlooking the Costa Calida. If you're
looking for a villa in Spain, then there are few places on the mainland that can match
Almeria for its combination of keen property prices and exceptional weather.
