The walled city of Avila in Central Spain sits deep within the Sistema Central mountain range at a height of 3,700ft above sea level. Only 50kms northwest of the Spanish capital, the city is a tourist hotspot - its intact 12th century walls and battlements that encircle the old town being the prime attraction. For property hunters, Avila is an excellent place in which to own Spanish property, either as a holiday home or as an investment.
Tourists come to Avila all year round, but it is during the summer months that Avila's tourist population is at its greatest. Spaniards from nearby Madrid and also from along the south coast of Spain come here to escape the intense summer heat. On average, Avila is some 8°c to 10°c cooler than Madrid during the height of the summer! During the depths of the winter however, it is not unusual for there to be snow on the ground in parts of the city.
Aside from the 2,526 metres of historic wall and the 88 towers that adorn the wall, Avila offers a wealth of architecture around many of its streets. There are numerous churches and monasteries in the town, and a number of shrines, many of which are dedicated to the mystic Santa Teresa. Avila effortlessly combines modern life with these relics from the past. Shops, restaurants, bars and other everyday facilities stand side by side with Avila's history.
Avila is the place to come to if you want to realise that dream of living in the Spanish mountains. In the countryside around the city, cheap Avila property is readily available. Renovation projects are numerous too - ruins and derelict Avila property costing as little as €25,000 euros in the mountainside villages within the province of Avila. Spanish property in Avila City is somewhat more expensive, although even here a 3-bed villa in Spain can be purchased for under €150,000 euros.
