Castellar de la Frontera is a traditional white Andalucian village perched high up on a hill in the southern part of Cadiz province. It is close to the beautiful towns of San Roque and Sotogrande, both of which offer Spanish property next to world class golfing facilities and are two excellent locations in which to buy a villa in Spain.
Castellar de la Frontera is essentially divided into two parts. The old town, which was constructed on the site of a prehistoric settlement, is the historic heart of Castellar. Here, medieval whitewashed Spanish property crowd around narrow streets that wind their way up to the castle on top of the hill. The new town, known as Nuevo Castellar, is actually located some 7kms away in the valley below the old town.
Nuevo Castellar is where the majority of Castellar's population now live. Built in 1971, Nuevo Castellar was developed as a new community to re-house the few inhabitants who continued to live in the old town after its decline in the 50s and 60s. Castellar property in the old town was considered too costly to modernise, many of them still standing without the basics of sewage systems and mains water supply. The residents of the old town have now made Castellar property in the new town their true home.
