Twenty-five kilometres from the Portuguese frontier in Central Spain is one of the country's oldest towns - Ciudad Rodrigo. From Neolithic settlers many thousands of years ago to the townspeople of the present day, Ciudad Rodrigo has seen almost continuous occupation by a succession of societies who've risen and fallen within its boundaries. Today, Ciudad Rodrigo is a fascinating place in which to purchase Spanish property as it offers peace and tranquillity in historic surroundings, far away from the devices of mass tourism which seem to have gripped many other parts of Spain.
Ciudad Rodrigo is a walled town sat on top of a rocky outcrop overlooking the Agueda River. Its architecture is predominantly medieval with lines of three-storey buildings crowded around narrow streets, over which quaint balconies hang. Some of the buildings have whitewashed exteriors, while others around the old part of town have exposed stone facades.
On the outskirts of Ciudad Rodrigo and in the surrounding countryside, an extensive choice of Ciudad Rodrigo property awaits prospective Spanish property buyers. Everything from ruins and derelict Ciudad Rodrigo property in need of renovation / re-build to a grand villa in Spain with acres of land can be found close to this very historic town.
