The Costa Calida is a beautiful 250km stretch of coastline in southeastern Spain. It is
situated between the Costa Blanca and the Costa de Almeria, taking in the cities of
Murcia and Cartagena, as well as the town of Aguilas at its southern extent. The Costa
Calida has become a hotspot for Spanish property investment in recent years, being
located in one of the more alluring and historic parts of Spain where the sun seems to
always shine and the sea is always warm.
In fact, the Costa Calida is one of the sunniest, warmest and driest places in Spain. On
average you can expect to receive 315 days of sunshine each year, and experience
maximum summertime temperatures in the 30°c - 35°c range. During the winter,
minimum temperatures rarely drop below 12°c - 14°c, whilst daytime temperatures
often reach 20°c or more - perfect for the all year round sunseeker!
Of the two main cities in the region, Cartagena on the Costa Calida coast is the oldest.
Founded by the Carthaginians some 2300 years ago, Cartagena has witnessed the rise
and fall of many civilisations, all of whom have left their mark on the city. Relics
from the ancient Arabs, Byzantines and Romans intermingle with modern-day
buildings. The recently discovered Roman amphitheatre being one of the more
impressive reminders of the city's past.
Further inland, the city of Murcia is revered as one of the most outstanding cities in
Spain. Founded in the 9th Century AD, it stands on the banks of a river and is said to
have a building of note at almost every turn! There is a huge Moorish influence
around the city, Murcia's city walls being the most impressive example.
The Costa Calida coastline itself consists of sandy beaches and rocky headlands,
interspersed with wetland habitats and fishing villages. The coastal towns of
Mazarron and Aguilas in the south of the region are popular resort locations for
tourists, as is La Manga - perhaps one of the world's most famous resort locations.
La Manga is located on a small 22km-wide strip of land between the Mediterranean
Sea and the Mar Menor - Europe's largest saltwater lagoon. It is a premier leisure
resort, and is home to three world class golf courses, Europe's #1 tennis centre and a
huge array of watersports. There is also a diverse collection of restaurants and bars, as
well as beautiful beaches and all the luxuries you'd expect at a top resort.
La Manga is a great location in which to purchase a villa in Spain too, although prices
are likely to be higher in the resort than in surrounding areas of Costa Calida. Other
'hot' investment areas in which to buy Costa Calida property include San Javier, Cabo
de Palos, Cartagena and Puerto de Mazarron. Away from the coast, good quality
Costa Calida property can be found in the city of Murcia and also in Alcantarilla.
The Costa Calida is a great place in which to invest in Spanish property, whether for
your own use or as an income property. It is popular without being too popular, and is
suitable for both tourists and expats alike.
