The Costa de la Luz is a peaceful and idyllic location in which to purchase Spanish
property. Mostly untouched by the high-rise developments that are found along some
of the southeastern and eastern Costas, the Costa de la Luz, located in the province of
Andalucia, is home to unspoilt beaches and wide open spaces that mirror the relaxed
pace of life here.
Facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Costa de la Luz has a very different climate to regions
that border the Mediterranean. The air is often warmer and more humid, whilst the
prevailing southwest winds make the Costa de la Luz a paradise for surfers. During
the winter, the region is often one of the warmest in Spain!
The coastline of the Costa de la Luz is divided into two distinct areas. The Huelva
Coast is the westernmost part of the Costa de la Luz, running from the Portuguese
border at Ayamonte down to the mouth of the Guadalquivir River at Sanlucar de
Barrameda. The shoreline is flat with long beaches of golden sand. Between the delta
at Huelva and the Guadalquivir River runs an almost unbroken beach (Playa de
Castilla) which is some 30 miles long!
The Cadiz coast is the eastern section of the Costa de la Luz. A little more rugged in
places, this part of the coastline runs from the river, around the Bay of Cadiz and out
to the southernmost point of Spain at the Strait of Gibraltar. Coastal wine-producing
towns are numerous along this stretch, with Cadiz itself being home to their most
famous of wines - Manzanilla.
Inland, the terrain is diverse. The lush green plains which dominate along the coast,
give way to rolling hills and vineyards, before the eventual mountainscapes of the
Sierra Morena to the North of Huelva, and the westernmost peaks of the Cordillera
Penibetica to the east of Cadiz.
Buying a Costa de la Luz property is a dream come true for many people in search of
a tranquil, laid-back lifestyle, but with all the benefits of modern facilities available in
the surrounding towns and cities of Andalucia. Property prices are slightly cheaper in
this region, making it a hotspot for investment by many Northern Europeans who are
only just discovering the area. For example, a 2/3 bedroom home could be yours for
as little as 135,000 euros.
Chiclana de la Frontera, a short drive from Cadiz, is a popular location in which to
buy a villa in Spain. Cadiz itself, which is now becoming better known to European
tourists, offers quality properties at affordable prices too. Other areas in which to seek
out your Costa de la Luz property include Jerez de la Frontera and also Mazagon on
the Playa de Castilla.
As with other locations in Spain, you will need to take into account additional
expenses when buying your Spanish property. You should allow roughly 8% of the
purchase price for legal fees and notary fees, as well as for tax liabilities. Also, bear in
mind the cost of removals to your new Spanish home on the Costa de la Luz.
