Located on a plateau to the south of the giant Cordillera Cantabrica mountain range in Northern Spain is the province of Leon. Dominated by wooded hillsides and the mountains that rise to the north, Leon is untouched by mass tourism and is therefore an ideal area in which to buy Spanish property if you're after a countryside retreat in a good fishing and hunting environment.
Leon is an historic and ancient land. Its Celtic and Roman origins combine to give the province a rich cultural fabric, which has been later added to by the Moors and the Knights Templar in the Middle Ages, the latter of whom built many of the forts and castles that are found around the province. In 1983, Leon was administratively joined to the Castille region to make Castilla y Leon - Spain's largest autonomous region.
The city of Leon dominates the province. It is a very cosmopolitan city and combines its ancient architecture with modern shops, restaurants and office buildings. Leon's cathedral, with its 250 stained glass windows and rose panel, is the city's most important historical monument, while the older parts of Leon offer a unique opportunity to walk through the city's illustrious past.
For prospective Leon property buyers, apartments, townhouses and villas within the newer parts of the city offer the best way forward to owning Spanish property in this historic city. In the surrounding countryside there are several towns and villages offering 'value-for-money' Leon property. In the popular town of Valencia Don Juan to the south of Leon City, a 3-bed villa in Spain can be acquired for as little as €150,000 euros.
