Mallorca (Majorca) is the largest of four islands that make up the Balearic Island
Group in the Mediterranean. It has an impressive array of Spanish property for sale,
and is rated as one of Europe's top resorts, with over 8 million tourists visiting the
island every year. Mallorca caters for every taste - there are long sandy beaches,
stunningly beautiful countryside, historic sites and some of the hottest clubs and
discos in Europe. Visitors and residents can enjoy sports as diverse as rock climbing
in the mountains, which line the northern end of the island, to yachting around the
bays and headlands. The island is also home to one of Europe's top concert halls - the
Auditorio de Palma de Mallorca.
Amongst the coves and headlands of Mallorca, there are more than seventy beaches to
enjoy, some of which are only accessible by boat. The most popular beaches include a
set of three beaches in Peguera in the southwest of Mallorca, and Arenal beach at
S'Arenal towards the southern end of Palma Bay. During the sizzling summer months,
many of Mallorca's beaches and beachside restaurants are bustling with tourists, but
they are generally quieter during the cooler winter months.
The climate in Mallorca is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and springs, and
long dry and warm summers. The island typically receives around 300 days of
sunshine each year, averaging 10 hours of unbroken sunshine during the summer and
5 hours during the winter. The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which graces the
entire north coast of the island, provides an effective barrier against cold winds
coming in off continental Europe during the winter months.
Located in the dramatic Palma Bay is the island's capital city, Palma de Mallorca. The
city's tree-lined avenues, bars, restaurants and outside entertainment are a big draw to
all who visit the island. Palma de Mallorca's best attraction however is Palma
Cathedral, which is an imposing sight at any time of day or night. Valldermossa,
famed for its monastery, and Alcudia, home to one of the biggest beaches in Mallorca,
are popular areas on the north side of the island. On the south side, Cala d'Or and Cala
Mondrago are popular with tourists, as are the underground caverns at Caves of Drach
near Cala Mandia.
Entry level to buy Mallorca property is around £150,000GBP / 225,000 euros. This
will get the buyer a small off-plan apartment. A two-bedroom apartment around
Palma Bay is likely to cost in the region of £350,000GBP / 525,000 euros. But
whereas Mallorca property has a relatively high price tag, it also represents a fantastic
investment opportunity. Spanish property prices on the island are climbing at a rate
equivalent to around 10% each year. In some areas, such as Bendinat near Palma,
prices have shot up by a lot more than the average, Bendinat recording an increase on
some properties of 25% in the last year. If you're looking for a villa in Spain with
great investment potential, then Mallorca is definitely the right location in which to
buy!
