Situated on a hill overlooking the Guadiana River in central Extremadura is the historical town of Merida. Recognised as the main tourist centre in the region, Merida is a treasure-trove of Roman architecture, laying claim to the longest Roman bridge in Spain. It is a great place in which to buy inexpensive Spanish property, and also offers investors a good opportunity to buy an income-generating villa in Spain.
Founded in 25BC, Merida has a wealth of history within its administrative boundary. The Roman amphitheatre is a big attraction in the town, along with the fantastic Roman fort (The Alcazaba) and the Temple of Diana. Today, Merida effortlessly mixes ancient and modern with great effect. Restaurants, bars and cafes line the streets, and there is plenty of entertainment on offer when the sun goes down too.
Merida property in the city itself is very varied. At one end of the spectrum there are old buildings, some in need of renovation, that date back several hundred years. In other areas of the city are new Spanish property developments offering quality apartments at low prices. Merida property on the outskirts of the city and in the surrounding countryside includes chalets, farmhouses and fincas, many of which would make ideal renovation projects.
