Nerja, situated to the east of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, is an idyllic location in
which to hunt for Spanish property. It is Spain's sunniest region, basking in an
average of 3499 sunshine hours every year, and is only second to Rhodes in the
league table of sunniest locations in Europe. Together with its all year round warm
climate, fine white sandy beaches and dramatic surroundings, the region of Nerja
offers residents and visitors a true slice of paradise.
Along the coastline, long white sandy beaches merge with rugged headlands. Pine
trees and shrub land line the shore, some climbing up into rocky outcrops which so
define the character of the eastern Costa del Sol. As if to add further drama to the
landscape, the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range shimmer in
the haze as they rise up behind the beach headlands.
Unlike some other stretches of the Costa del Sol there are no high-rise buildings or
apartment blocks marring the skyline. Only low-rise villa residences, many
whitewashed to blend in with the 'Mediterranean ideal', are seen between the pines
along the Nerja coastline. Further into the town of Nerja itself, this style of housing
becomes even more apparent. Centuries-old buildings line the winding streets, many
with wrought iron work that stands out against the gleaming whitewash, and all set
against the backdrop of an azure sky.
Nerja, for all its charm and history, has a modern side to it as well. It is well-
connected to other towns along the Costa del Sol and nearby Almeria via a dual
carriageway and selection of other maintained roads. Cafes, restaurants and bars,
offering everything from a cordon bleu menu to bacon and eggs, are plentiful along
the beachfront and in the town of Nerja itself. Entertainment is as lively or as quiet as
you want it to be in Nerja, while the town and its surroundings are well served by
shops and service providers.
Nerja offers property hunters the opportunity to realise their Spanish property dreams
along what is perhaps the most idolised of all of the Spanish Costas. Nerja property is
available in the town itself at reasonable prices. Premium Nerja property can be found
up in the hillside towns overlooking Nerja, such as Frigiliana and Torrox, as well as
along the beachfront.
Just as when buying a villa in Spain in other regions of the country, purchasers are
advised to allocate funds equivalent to 8% to 10% of the property value to cover legal
expenses, notary fees and taxes.
