Situated on flat and fertile land some 25kms west of Alicante City in Eastern Spain is the small town of Novelda. It is a town that has established itself on the bank of the river Vinalop and is home to nearly 20,000 residents. Novelda is an interesting area in which to buy Spanish property as it offers a mix of new developments and older-style properties suitable for renovation.
The climate in Novelda is somewhat more extreme than along the coast. Summertime temperatures are often up to 5°c higher than in Alicante, while during the winter Novelda can be several degrees cooler. As it is only a half-hour drive from the coast, the town of Novelda is ideally placed in many people's eyes as a rural town away from the hub of tourism, but grants easy access to the Costa Blanca's wonderful sandy beaches.
The countryside around Novelda is lush and green - a superb environment in which to build that dream villa in Spain. There are many vineyards in the area (Novelda is one of the most important wine-producing towns in the region), along with countless orange and date groves. The town's economy is also supported by marble production, receiving in the raw material from quarries in the region.
Novelda property offers much potential to investors. On the new Spanish property developments in the area, villas, townhouses and apartments can be obtained at a slightly lower price than in the tourist resorts along Costa Blanca's coastline. In the town there are also opportunities to buy historical Novelda property. Recently, a late-19th century 10-bed 'casa señorial', complete with handmade marble flooring was on the market for €472,500 euros. With a lack of hotels in Novelda, this type of property would make for an ideal small hotel conversion project.
