Famous as the backdrop to the 1961 movie "El Cid", Peniscola is a beautiful walled town on the Northern Costa del Azahar in Eastern Spain. Situated upon a rocky promontory in juts out into the Mediterranean Sea, flanked either side by headlands and sandy bays. Peniscola is a perfect location in which to buy Spanish property if you are looking for peace and quiet in a historic setting.
Peniscola has been referred to as a "mini-Gibraltar", as it is only connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand. The town has grown much since its days as a Moorish stronghold, and now offers many EU Blue Flag beaches that are ideal for families. The beaches are also home to a variety of activities, such as volleyball, boat rides and jet skiing.
The walled town itself is a labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed buildings. Classic wrought iron balconies overhang in places from the Peniscola property here. Outside the walled town is a jumble of Mediterranean buildings and more modern additions, including some stylish hotel and low-rise apartment blocks.
Peniscola property is most sought-after along the beachfront and in the walled town itself. Here, apartments, villas and townhouses dominate, separated by palms, fruit trees and other lush green vegetation. In the town there is Spanish property ready for renovation, while out on the surrounding hillsides there is more room in which to construct that dream villa in Spain.
