Situated in the southwest of the Galicia region is the beautiful province of Pontevedra. It takes in some of Spain's most dramatic coastline along the Rias Baixas, where there is a series of inlets, bays and headlands accommodating serene sandy beaches and visually stunning rock formations. Pontevedra is in fact the most highly populated of all Galicia's provinces and is an idyllic area in which to buy Spanish property.
The climate in Pontevedra may be considered as sub-tropical. The area experiences warm summers and mild winters with ample rainfall, keeping the land lush and green. The province in fact has the broadest range of landscapes in Galicia. There are high mountain peaks covered with snow during the winter, lush green mountain valleys, beautiful rolling hills and plains that lead down to the coastline where there are many small historic fishing villages. In many ways, the landscape can be likened to that found in Wales or Scotland.
Pontevedra is home to two large cities - Vigo and the city of Pontevedra - along with a 'Mediterranean-style' tourist resort. Vigo is a classical city with Celtic overtones. It has many Romanesque and Gothic structures within its boundary and is one of the nicest city areas in which to buy Spanish property. The city of Pontevedra is also an historic beacon of the region, presenting winding streets and classical buildings for tourists to amble around and is again a wonderful location in which to purchase Pontevedra property.
Pontevedra is also well known for its Rias Baixas wines derived from the Albariņos grape. The main wine-producing areas are O Rosal in the extreme southwest of the province and Val do Salnčs to the north of Pontevedra City. If you're looking for a villa in Spain with its own vineyard, then Pontevedra property in the valleys along the Rias Baixas are worth serious consideration.
