The province of Salamanca is situated on Spain's main northern plateau (known as the Meseta) to the west of Madrid. It is a sparsely populated region dominated by plains and rolling hills covered in bushy undergrowth. Cattle and sheep graze over this vast land, which is dotted with many medieval towns and villages - ideal locations for buying rural Spanish property.
Nearly half of the province's population live in the city of Salamanca close to the main motorway route that travels northeastwards towards Valladolid and Burgos. The city is well known for its two universities - one of which is amongst the oldest university establishments in Europe. Students contribute significantly to the city's population. Many come to Salamanca to learn Spanish as residents in the city are reputed to speak the purest form of Spanish in the country.
Salamanca City is the main tourist centre in the province. Many come for its wonderful architecture and to see the Salamanca University. Within the city, there are two cathedrals, a monastery, several churches and a wealth of Gothic designs to take in.
Salamanca property in the province is relatively cheap. Just as in neighbouring Extremadura, a villa in Spain here costs half the price of those along the south and east coasts. The province also offers many opportunities to buy ruins or derelict Salamanca property to renovate or re-develop. For those who are looking for Spanish property in medieval surroundings, the frontier town of Ciudad Rodrigo could be the place. Here, medieval buildings stand side by side over ancient narrow streets as if caught in a time warp.
