Santander is the provincial capital of Cantabria in Northern Spain. It is a modern waterfront city with a busy port and thriving commercial centre. Facilities ranging from hospitals and universities to sports centres and shopping arcades can be found in Santander, alongside historic sites which help to represent the city's past. If you want city life that is only minutes away from the wilderness and natural beauty of the Cantabria region, then Santander is a perfect location in which to buy Spanish property.
The climate in Santander is not always favourable for relaxing out in the sun. On average it receives 125 days of rain each year, and the air temperature is very variable. When conditions are right a hot summer day could see the temperature climb to 35°c. Conversely, during the winter daytime temperatures may struggle to reach 10°c.
The coastline away from the city in both directions offers some wonderful sights. Long white sandy beaches can be found right along the coastline, interspersed with craggy headlands that plunge into the sea. There are also many quaint fishing villages along the shore, many of which have preserved their traditions and are untouched by mass tourism. Laredo, midway between Santander and Bilbao, is the biggest tourist resort on the coastline. Here, a beautiful white beach sweeps around the bay and headland for several kms.
Spanish property in the city itself is varied. Plush apartments on new developments are available in the city, from which there is ample opportunity to gain steady rental income courtesy of the number of people who come to Santander to work. Other types of Santander property include run-down buildings ripe for renovation and exclusive villas in the suburbs. In the more rural surroundings, ruined Santander property and plots of land are available on which you can build that dream villa in Spain.
