Situated in the province of Cantabria in Northern Spain, some 15-minutes outside of Santander, is the wondrous village of Santillana del Mar.. Recognised as being one of the most perfectly preserved medieval villages in Europe, Santillana del Mar is a time capsule where life seems to have remained the same for centuries. The village is now a national landmark, and is much visited by coach loads of tourists who come to walk around the village's ancient streets.
Buying Spanish property in Santillana del Mar is not easy. The village is small, comprising of just a handful of ancient narrow cobbled trackways that wind around a limited number of old buildings. In the surrounding area the seaside resort of Suances, just 10-minutes north of Santillana del Mar, offers many excellent apartments and villas overlooking the sea. However, if you have your heart set on a villa in Spain in a quaint village in Cantabria then Novales, a little further to the west is worth considering as an alternative to Santillana del Mar.
