The Sierra Nevada is Spain's highest mountain range. It is located in the province of Granada in Southern Spain, about three-quarters of an hours drive from the city of Granada and the Costa Tropical. With peaks rising up to more than 10,000 feet, the mountain range supports a cap of pure white snow for six months of the year, making it home to Europe's most southerly ski resort as well as an exclusive area in which to buy Spanish property.
The ski resort itself is based around the village of Pradollano. It is a small thriving community that has all the essential services tourists and residents need - from shops and banks to pharmacies and church services. Ski equipment hire is readily available in Pradollano, and its base station offers skiers access to 45 runs, six of which are exhilarating off-course trails, between November and May each year.
Besides downhill skiing the Sierra Nevada also caters for snowboarders, as well as offering many other winter sports including cross-country skiing, ski jumping, moguls and adventure skiing. There are also plenty of kids-oriented skiing opportunities too.
Between June and October, when the snow has melted, the Sierra Nevada is a barren mountainous area popular with climbers and hikers. On a clear day atop Veleta Peak, the view is completely breathtaking. Spain is laid out beneath you like a map and the Atlas Mountains in Morocco can be clearly made out.
Opportunities to own Sierra Nevada property are numerous. There are many ruins and plots of land on the slopes of the mountain range between Granada and the peaks, all of which can be acquired cheaply and would make an idea location for a villa in Spain or for a chalet-style Sierra Nevada property. In the resort of Pradollano, Spanish property for sale is less abundant. Alpine-style chalets and apartments make up the bulk of the property here, and are expensive when compared to property further down the mountainside.
