The town of Ubeda stands on an elevated plain in the province of Jaen approximately one-hour north of Granada in the region of Andalucia. Surrounded by plains of olive groves the town is home to around 30,000 people and possesses some of the finest Renaissance-style architecture in Southern Spain. Ubeda is an excellent location in which to buy Spanish property if you're looking to experience the traditional side of Spain, far away from the influences of mass tourism.
The climate in Ubeda is rather more extreme than locations around the southern and eastern Costas. It receives roughly the same amount of sunshine hours as many of these other areas, but in general Ubeda is hotter during the summer and colder during the winter. With temperatures touching 40°c or more for days on end in July and August, it is little surprise that several of the towns close by to Ubeda, such as Baza, have communities of cave homes built into the rock, where it is much cooler.
The town of Ubeda is in fact quite close to the regional border with Castilla La Mancha in Central Spain...and it shows in abundance through the town's architecture. Absent is the traditional Andalucian whitewash that is so much a part of this region, replaced instead by the darker granite look more associated with Castilla. Additionally, a wholly Renaissance-style town layout has been implemented here, providing a more regimented look to the town that is much removed from the chaotic structure of a typical Andalucian pueblo blanco.
Apartments, townhouses and villas form the basic selection of Spanish property available to purchase in Ubeda, while on the outskirts of the city and in the surrounding province there is ample opportunity to acquire more rural Ubeda property, such as farmhouses and chalets. Ubeda property is relatively inexpensive too - a 3-bed villa in Spain 3kms from the city was recently on the market for €145,000 euros.
