Villena is a thriving town in the north-western hills of provincial Alicante. Best known for the manufacture of children's shoes, it was once home to the famous medieval author Don Juan Manuel. Property in the old part of town is clustered around the spectacular Atalaya castle, which stands high up on a rocky mound. In the newer parts of town are more modern buildings, hotels and office complexes, along with new Spanish property developments.
Located nearly 40kms from Alicante and the Costa Blanca, the climate in Villena is a little more extreme than on the coast. During the summer, the temperature may easily rise to 40°c, while during the winter it is possible for the temperature to drop to freezing point for a day or two.
If you are looking for Spanish property in a small rural town far away from the main centres of mass tourism, then Villena could be the place for you. The town is well-connected by road and rail links, and it is only a three-quarters of an hour drive to the international airport at Alicante.
Homes nestled around the base of Atalaya Castle are the most sought after by Villena property purchasers. Here, you will find townhouses, detached houses, villas and apartments. There is also Villena property in need of renovation in several areas around the urbanisation. Outside Villena, the surrounding area offers a wealth of newly built property, including those that would make for a very nice villa in Spain.
