Vitoria-Gasteiz is set upon a clearing at the top of a forested hill and was founded in medieval times. At the historical centre of the city is Vitoria's wonderful Gothic cathedral with a network of narrow streets spiralling out around it. On their exteriors the buildings flaunt beautiful wrought iron balconies decorated with potted plants, while others throw out bay windows that overhang the street below.
Modern Vitoria-Gasteiz is built around its medieval centre. Shopping centres, sports facilities, office buildings and residential developments mingle with landscaped parks and open areas across the rest of the city in a well-planned action of expansion. Today, some of the contemporary architecture in the city is just as impressive as those historical buildings at its heart.
When looking for Spanish property in Vitoria-Gasteiz, buyers have many choices. Around the outskirts of the city are some excellent new Vitoria property developments offering townhouses, duplex-style properties and chalets. The designs are very stylish, and incorporate a hint of 'medivalness' in some of their facades. Elsewhere around the city buyers can find apartments and townhouses closer to the centre. Occasionally, original medieval property in the town centre does become available - but this is quite rare.
